Remote Head Key Replacement in DFW: Guide to the Most Common Key Type

5 min readMarch 2, 2026By DFW Key Master Team

Your key has buttons and goes in the ignition. It's a remote head key — the most common type on DFW roads. Here's what it costs to replace.

What Is a Remote Head Key?

A remote head key is a transponder key with remote buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, sometimes panic or remote start) built into the plastic head. You insert it into the ignition to start the car, and the buttons control the door locks remotely.

This is the most common key type on DFW roads today — most vehicles from 2005-2020 use this design. If your key has buttons but you still physically insert it into the ignition, you have a remote head key.

How to Identify a Remote Head Key

You have a remote head key if:

  • Your key has a plastic head with buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, panic)
  • You physically insert the key into the ignition and turn it to start the car
  • The buttons on the key lock and unlock the doors remotely
  • The key is larger and thicker than a basic transponder key (no buttons)
  • Common on most Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai models from 2005-2020

What Makes Replacement More Complex

A remote head key requires three separate processes to replace:

  • Metal cutting — the key blade must be cut to match your ignition and door locks
  • Transponder programming — the chip inside the head must be programmed to your car's immobilizer so the engine starts
  • Remote programming — the buttons must be programmed to control your door locks, trunk, and panic function
  • All three must be done correctly for the key to fully work. Hardware stores can only do the first step

What It Costs to Replace a Remote Head Key in DFW

2026 pricing (cutting + chip programming + remote programming):

  • Standard remote head key (Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan): $150-$220
  • High-security remote head key (laser cut blade + chip + remote): $200-$350
  • Luxury remote head key (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus): $250-$500
  • All keys lost (no working key to copy from): add $30-$100 for VIN code lookup or ignition decoding
  • Spare key (you have a working key): lower end of the range
  • We confirm the exact price before dispatch

How Long Does Replacement Take?

A remote head key replacement takes 20-25 minutes on-site: 5 minutes to cut the metal blade, 10-15 minutes to program the transponder chip, and 5 minutes to program the remote buttons. We do all three steps at your location.

Total time including dispatch is usually 40-50 minutes across DFW. We come to you — no need to drive to a shop or dealership.

Can You Get a Cheaper Replacement?

You can buy a remote head key blank online for $20-$50, but be careful. Many aftermarket blanks lack the correct chip or frequency and won't program. You'll spend hours trying to program a key that doesn't work.

We use OEM or OEM-equivalent key blanks that are guaranteed to program. If you bring us an online blank, we'll try to program it — but we'll tell you upfront if it's not compatible, and we can supply one that is.

The programming cost is the same whether you supply the blank or we do ($50-$100 for programming). The difference is our blanks are guaranteed to work.
