Rekey Service in DFW: When to Rekey Your Car (and When Not To)
Not every situation needs a rekey. Here's when rekeying makes sense, when it doesn't, and what to do instead in DFW.
What Rekeying Actually Does
A rekey changes the internal tumblers of your lock cylinders so they accept a new key and reject the old one. The physical locks stay in your car — only the pins inside change. It's like changing the combination on a padlock.
Rekeying is faster and cheaper than replacing the entire lock hardware, and it gives you the same security result: the old key no longer works. Here's when it's the right call.
When to Rekey: The Clear Cases
These situations call for a rekey:
- You lost a key — the lost key can still open your doors. Rekey to invalidate it
- You bought a used car — you don't know who has copies. Rekey for peace of mind
- You went through a divorce or breakup — remove access from someone who had a key
- You lent a key to someone and didn't get it back — rekey to be safe
- Your key was stolen — rekey immediately, don't wait
- An employee with company vehicle access left the job — rekey the fleet vehicle
When You Don't Need a Rekey
In these cases, a rekey is unnecessary:
- You lost the key inside your own home and it's not in someone else's possession
- The key broke and you have both pieces — no one else has a working key
- You dropped the key in water and it's unrecoverable (lake, river, sewer)
- You just want a spare key — you don't need to rekey, just duplicate the existing one
- Your locks are working fine and you haven't lost a key — no reason to rekey
Rekey vs Replace: The Decision
If your locks are mechanically fine, rekey. If they're damaged, replace:
- Locks work fine, just want a new key → rekey ($180-$280)
- Locks are worn, sticky, or damaged → replace ($350-$550)
- Not sure? We diagnose on-site and tell you which makes sense before any work
- In most cases, rekey is sufficient — lock replacement is only needed for physical damage
What It Costs to Rekey a Car in DFW
2026 pricing for a typical 4-door vehicle:
- Rekey all 4 door locks: $150-$220
- Rekey all 4 doors + trunk: $180-$260
- Rekey all doors + trunk + ignition: $220-$350

How Long Does a Rekey Take?
A full rekey (all doors + trunk + ignition) takes 45-60 minutes on-site for a typical vehicle. We come to your location — no need to drive to a shop or leave your car.
You'll get new keys cut to match the rekeyed locks. We recommend getting at least two new keys so you have a spare. The first key is included; additional spares are $80-$120 each.
