Can a Locksmith Make a Key Without the Original? (Yes — Here's How)
You lost your only key. No spare. No backup. Can you still get a new key made? Yes — and here's the two ways we do it.
The Short Answer: Yes, We Can
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is a confident yes. A mobile locksmith can make a new car key even when every single key is lost. You don't need the original. You don't need a spare. You just need proof the car is yours.
There are two methods we use, and which one applies depends on your vehicle. Here's how each works.
Method 1: Key Code from the VIN
Every vehicle has a unique 17-digit VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) that acts like a fingerprint. Automakers keep a database that maps each VIN to a key code — the exact cutting specifications for that car's key.
Here's the process: We look up your VIN (it's on your registration, insurance card, or visible through the windshield on the driver's side dashboard). We use our database access to pull the key code for your vehicle. We cut a new key to that exact code on our mobile rig. Then we program the transponder chip to your car's computer.
This is the cleanest method and works for most vehicles. The whole process takes about 20-30 minutes on-site.
Method 2: Ignition Decoding
Sometimes the VIN key code isn't available — the database doesn't have older vehicles, or the locks have been rekeyed at some point. In that case, we use ignition decoding.
Here's how it works: We remove your ignition lock cylinder (the part the key goes into), use a specialized decoding tool to read the depths of each tumbler pin inside, and translate those depths into a key cut specification. Then we cut a key to match and program the chip.
This method takes longer — about 30-45 minutes — and requires some disassembly of your steering column, but it works on virtually any vehicle.
What About Smart Keys and Push-Button Start?
For vehicles with smart keys (push-button start, no physical key slot), the process is different. There's no ignition to decode — the car recognizes the fob electronically. In this case, we:
- Pull the key code from the VIN for the emergency backup key (the hidden physical key inside the fob)
- Program a new smart fob to your car's computer using dealer-level diagnostic equipment
- Erase all lost keys from the car's memory so the lost fob can never be used to start your car (important for security)
- Test the new fob to confirm lock, unlock, trunk, and push-button start all work
What You Need to Have Ready
Before we can make a key without the original, we need:
- Proof of ownership — your vehicle registration, insurance card, or title. This is non-negotiable and required by Texas law.
- Your VIN — we can read it from the dashboard, but having it on your registration speeds things up
- The vehicle present — we need to be at the car to cut and program the key
- A photo ID matching the name on the registration — another security requirement
How Much Does It Cost When All Keys Are Lost?
When there's no key to copy from, the process takes longer and requires specialized tools, so there's a small additional charge:
- Transponder key, all keys lost: $150-$250 (vs $120-$220 with a working key)
- Remote head key, all keys lost: $180-$300
- Smart key, all keys lost: $250-$500 (includes erasing lost keys from memory)
- Luxury smart key, all keys lost: $350-$650
