Key Stuck in the Ignition in DFW? How to Remove It Safely

5 min readJuly 1, 2026By DFW Key Master Team

Your key won't come out of the ignition. Don't yank it — here's how to remove it safely and what's probably causing it to stick.

Don't Force It Out

A key stuck in the ignition is frustrating, but yanking it out can break the key off inside the cylinder — turning a $150 problem into a $400 problem. The key is stuck for a reason, and understanding that reason is the first step to getting it out safely.

Let's go through the most common causes and fixes, from simplest to most serious.

Cause 1: The Car Isn't in Park (Most Common)

Most modern cars won't release the key unless the transmission is in Park. This is a safety feature — it prevents you from removing the key and walking away from a car that could roll.

The fix: make sure the transmission is fully in Park. If you parked on a hill, the transmission may be under load — put your foot on the brake, shift to Neutral, then back to Park firmly. Try removing the key again. If you have a manual transmission, make sure it's in gear and the parking brake is set.

Cause 2: The Battery Is Dead

Many modern cars have an electronic interlock that releases the key. If your car battery is dead, the interlock can't function and the key stays locked in. This is common after leaving lights on or a battery failure.

The fix: jump-start the car or charge the battery. Once the car has power, the interlock should release the key. If you need a jump, most roadside assistance plans cover it, or we can help.

Cause 3: The Shift Interlock Is Stuck

The shift interlock is the mechanism that prevents you from shifting out of Park without your foot on the brake. If it malfunctions, it can also prevent the key from releasing. This is common on older vehicles.

The fix: look for a small release slot near the shifter (often under a small cover or cap). Insert a pen or small tool and press the release while turning the key to the off position. This is a temporary workaround — get the interlock checked.

Cause 4: Worn Ignition Tumblers

If the internal tumblers in the ignition cylinder are worn, they can fail to retract fully when the key is in the off position — trapping the key. This is a mechanical problem that gets worse over time.

The fix: this requires professional service. We can repair or replace the ignition cylinder on-site. Don't force the key out — you'll break it off inside. Call us and we'll remove it safely and fix the underlying problem.

Cause 5: A Broken Key

If part of the key has broken off inside the ignition, the remaining piece can jam the cylinder. You may not even realize the key is broken until you try to remove it and only the head comes out.

The fix: don't try to fish it out yourself with paperclips or glue — you'll push it deeper. We have specialized extraction tools that remove broken key pieces without damaging the cylinder. Once extracted, we can cut a new key and check the cylinder for damage.

What to Do While You Wait

If the key is stuck and you need to call for help, here's how to secure the car:

  • Lock the doors manually (if the key is stuck in the ignition, the remote may not work)
  • If you can't lock the car and need to leave it, try to park in a secure, well-lit area
  • Don't leave valuables visible in the car
