Key Fob Repair in DFW: When to Fix vs Replace (and What It Costs)

5 min readDecember 4, 2025By DFW Key Master Team

Your key fob isn't working. Is it repairable or do you need a new one? Here's how to tell — and what each option costs in DFW.

First: Is It the Battery or the Fob?

90% of 'broken' key fobs just have a dead battery. Before you assume the fob is broken, replace the battery. It costs $4 at any drugstore and takes 2 minutes. If the fob works after a battery swap — problem solved. If it doesn't, keep reading.

When Key Fob Repair Is Possible

These issues can often be repaired:

  • Lost programming — the fob is fine but the car doesn't recognize it. We reprogram it: $50-$100
  • Button contacts worn — the buttons feel mushy or don't click. We can sometimes clean or repair the contacts: $50-$100
  • Minor water damage — if the fob got slightly wet, drying it may fix it. If it got soaked, the circuit board may be permanently damaged
  • Broken key blade — if the emergency key blade snapped, we can cut a new one: $30-$50

When You Need a Full Replacement

These issues require a new fob:

  • Circuit board is dead — the LED doesn't light when you press a button, even after a new battery
  • Severe water damage — the fob was submerged and the circuit board is corroded
  • Physical damage — the fob was crushed, cracked, or run over
  • Internal solder joints broken — from a hard drop. Not repairable in most cases
  • In these cases, you need a replacement fob: $140-$350 (or $300-$600 for luxury)

The Decision: Repair or Replace?

Here's how to decide:

  • Fob works but car doesn't recognize it → reprogram ($50-$100). Cheapest fix
  • Buttons don't work but fob starts the car → try button repair ($50-$100), or replace if repair fails
  • Fob is dead (no LED, no response) → replace ($140-$350). Repair isn't possible
  • Fob is physically damaged → replace ($140-$350). Physical damage isn't repairable
  • Not sure? We diagnose on-site and tell you which makes sense before any work

What It Costs in DFW

2026 pricing:

  • Battery replacement (DIY): $4 — buy a CR2032 at any store
  • Fob reprogramming (existing fob): $50-$100
  • Button contact repair: $50-$100 (if possible)
  • Replacement fob + programming: $140-$350
  • Luxury smart fob replacement: $300-$600
  • We diagnose on-site and recommend the most cost-effective option

Can You Repair a Fob Yourself?

For battery replacement, yes — anyone can do it. For button repair or reprogramming, it depends. Some older vehicles have a DIY reprogramming sequence (check your owner's manual or YouTube). Most 2010+ vehicles require diagnostic equipment for reprogramming.

If the fob's circuit board is dead or physically damaged, there's no DIY fix — you need a replacement. We can supply and program one on-site.
