Ignition Cylinder Replacement in DFW: When You Need It & What It Costs
Your ignition cylinder is worn, damaged, or broken. Here's when you need a full replacement, what it costs, and how we do it at your location in DFW.
What Is an Ignition Cylinder?
The ignition cylinder is the lock mechanism where you insert your key and turn to start the car. Inside the cylinder are tumbler pins (wafer pins in most modern cars) that match your key's cuts. When the correct key is inserted, the pins align, the cylinder turns, and the electrical contacts engage to start the engine.
Over years of use, these tumblers wear down, the electrical contacts burn out, or the cylinder gets damaged. When that happens, you need a repair or full replacement.
When You Need Ignition Cylinder Replacement
Replacement (not just repair) is necessary when:
- The key won't turn even after repair attempts — the tumblers are too worn
- The cylinder housing is cracked or physically damaged — from a break-in or accident
- The electrical contacts are burned out — the key turns but nothing happens
- The key is stuck and won't come out — a broken tumbler is jamming the cylinder
- You want to upgrade to a high-security cylinder — from standard to laser-cut
- The tumblers have been repaired before and are failing again — the cylinder is worn out
When Repair Is Enough (No Replacement Needed)
Repair (not full replacement) works for these issues:
- Worn tumblers — we replace the individual pins without replacing the whole cylinder. $150-$200
- Stuck key — a broken wafer or debris. We clean or replace the wafer. $120-$180
- Minor electronic issues — the switch contacts need cleaning. $100-$150
- If the cylinder housing is intact and the electrical switch is fine, repair is cheaper and faster
What Ignition Cylinder Replacement Involves
Here's the process when we replace your ignition cylinder on-site:
- We disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts
- We remove the steering column covers to access the ignition
- We detach the electrical connector from the ignition switch
- We remove the retaining pin or bolt that holds the cylinder in place
- We slide out the old cylinder and insert the new one
- We secure the new cylinder, reconnect the electrical connector, and reassemble
- If the new cylinder came with a new key, we cut a spare. If you want to keep your existing key, we rekey the new cylinder to match ($30-$50 extra)
- We program the transponder chip if your key has one
- We test the key turns smoothly, the engine starts, and all electrical functions work
- Total time: 45-60 minutes on-site

Can It Be Done at My Location?
Yes. Our mobile rigs carry replacement ignition cylinders for most popular makes and models, along with steering column tools and key-cutting equipment. We replace your ignition on-site — at home, work, or roadside. No tow needed.
For luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) or unusual models, we may need to order the cylinder, which adds 1-2 days. We'll tell you upfront if parts need to be ordered.
What Happens to Your Key After Replacement?
The new ignition cylinder comes with a new key. Your old key won't work in the new ignition. You have two options: use the new key that comes with the cylinder (and get a spare made), or we can rekey the new cylinder to match your existing key so you keep using the same key for everything.
Rekeying to match your existing key costs $30-$50 extra but keeps things simple — one key for ignition and doors. Most people choose this option.
