Door Lock Repair in DFW: Residential & Commercial Guide
Your door lock isn't working right. Here's what's probably wrong, what it costs to fix, and when to call a professional in DFW.
Common Door Lock Problems
Door lock issues fall into a few categories:
- Key won't turn — worn tumblers, frozen pins, or a damaged cylinder
- Key is hard to insert or remove — worn key or debris in the cylinder
- Lock won't latch — the bolt doesn't engage the strike plate (misalignment)
- Lock is stiff or gritty — lack of lubrication or worn tumblers
- Door won't stay closed — the latch isn't engaging or the door is misaligned
- Electronic lock won't respond — failed actuator or wiring issue (commercial)
Problem 1: Key Won't Turn
If the key won't turn in the lock, the tumblers inside the cylinder are worn, stuck, or damaged. This is common on older locks that have been used thousands of times.
The fix: we can repair the cylinder by replacing the worn tumblers ($120-$180), or replace the entire cylinder ($180-$250). If the key is also worn, we cut a new one. If you want to keep the same key, we rekey the new cylinder to match.
Problem 2: Key Is Hard to Insert or Remove
If the key goes in stiffly or gets stuck coming out, either the key is worn (the cuts are rounded) or there's debris in the cylinder. Try lubricating with graphite (not WD-40). If that doesn't help, the key or cylinder is worn.
The fix: if the key is worn, we cut a new one ($80-$120). If the cylinder is worn, we repair or replace it ($120-$250). A new key is the cheaper first step — try that before replacing the cylinder.
Problem 3: Lock Won't Latch
If the bolt doesn't engage the strike plate, the door won't lock. This is usually caused by door misalignment — the door has sagged or shifted, so the bolt no longer lines up with the strike plate opening.
The fix: we adjust the door (realign the hinges) or reposition the strike plate. Cost: $100-$200. We can also install a reinforced strike plate with longer screws for better security.
Problem 4: Lock Is Stiff or Gritty
If the lock feels stiff, gritty, or hard to turn, the tumblers are dry or dirty. A shot of graphite lubricant can help. If it's still stiff after lubrication, the tumblers are worn and need professional service.
The fix: try graphite first (DIY, $5). If that doesn't work, we clean and lubricate the cylinder ($50-$80) or replace worn tumblers ($120-$180). Don't use WD-40 — it attracts dirt and makes the problem worse.
