Car Key Duplication in DFW: Professional vs DIY — What Actually Works

5 min readDecember 20, 2025By DFW Key Master Team

Want to duplicate your car key? Here's what you can do yourself and what needs a professional — plus what it costs in DFW.

It Depends on Your Key Type

Whether you can duplicate your car key yourself depends entirely on what kind of key it is. A basic metal key? Yes, any hardware store can do it. A transponder key with a chip? No — the hardware store can cut the metal but can't program the chip. Here's the breakdown.

Basic Metal Key: DIY Is Fine

If your car was made before 1995 and uses a plain metal key with no plastic head, you can duplicate it at any hardware store for $2-$5. The machine copies the cuts onto a new blank. No programming needed. The copy works immediately.

Transponder Key: Needs a Professional

If your car was made after 1995, the key has a transponder chip. The hardware store can cut the metal, but can't program the chip. The copy will fit the ignition but won't start the car — the immobilizer won't recognize the missing chip.

We duplicate transponder keys on-site: cutting + chip programming. Cost: $120-$220. Takes 15-20 minutes.

Remote Head Key: Needs a Professional

A remote head key (transponder + buttons) requires cutting, chip programming, AND remote programming. Hardware stores can only do the cutting. We handle all three on-site. Cost: $150-$280. Takes 20-25 minutes.

Smart Key: Needs a Professional

A smart key (proximity fob, push-to-start) has no metal blade to cut — it's entirely electronic. Duplicating it means programming a new fob to your car's computer. This requires dealer-level diagnostic equipment. We do it on-site. Cost: $200-$450. Takes 25-30 minutes.

The Hardware Store Test

Not sure what type you have? Take your key to a hardware store and ask for a copy. If they can do it for $2-$5 and the copy starts your car, you have a basic metal key. If they say they can cut it but can't program it, or if the cut key doesn't start the car, you have a transponder key — and you need a locksmith.

Why Professional Duplication Is Better

Even for keys that hardware stores can partially handle, professional duplication is more reliable. We use OEM or OEM-equivalent key blanks (guaranteed to work), professional cutting machines (precise cuts), and dealer-level programming equipment (correct chip programming).
